Wichita State University (WSU) is a public research university in Wichita, Kansas, United States. It is the third largest university governed by the Kansas Board of Regents.

Wichita State University offers over 60 degree programs in more than 200 areas of study in six schools. The Graduate School offers 44 master's degrees in over 100 areas and a specialist in education degree. It offers doctoral degrees in applied mathematics; audiology; chemical; communicative disorders and sciences; nursing practice; physical therapy; psychology (human factors programs, community and APA-accredited clinical psychology); educational administration; aerospace, industrial and mechanical engineering; and electrical and computer engineering.

Wichita State University also offers classes in four satellite locations. West Campus is located in the corn. This campus 9 acres (3.6 hectares) hosts 100-150 college classes each semester. South Campus University began offering courses Wichita State University in a new facility in Derby in January 2008. The center houses the WSU Center University Center Support and Research and the Department of Community Therapy Physical. [8] A quarter of a mile northeast of the campus, advanced education in general dentistry building, built in 2011, houses classrooms and a dental clinic. It is next to 75,000 square feet of the college (7,000 m2) Eugene M. Hughes Metropolitan Complex, where many non-credit courses are taught WSU.

 History

Wichita State University began in 1886 as Fairmount College, a private preparatory school congregation, founded by Rev. Joseph Parker Homer. Initially it referred to as "Young Ladies College", "Wichita Ladies College" and "Congregational female college". It was to admit women twelve years or more who were "able to read, write, spell and recite the parts of speech." Support came mainly from Plymouth Congregational Church to build it, but the school is not opened. In 1892, a corporation bought the property and the name Fairmount High School Institute. It opened in September to men and women, with emphasis on training in preaching or teaching. It closed due to financial difficulties.

In 1895, on the same site, Fairmount College opened college classes for men and women with funding from the Congregational Education Society. Amid growing financial problems, supporters of the university tried to get the city of Wichita to buy it in 1925, but failed. A second referendum was approved in 1926, and that fall he became the Municipal University of Wichita (popularly known as "University of Wichita" or "WU"). It was the first community college west of the Mississippi, serving low-income students. On July 1, 1964, the school officially entered the state system of higher education as Wichita State University (WSU).

WSU is one of three research institutions in the state of Kansas, along with Kansas State University (KSU) and the University of Kansas (KU).

Campus

The main campus is located at 1845 North Fairmount in northeast Wichita, is limited mostly between the streets 17th St N, N 21st St, Hillside St, Oliver Ave. Research facilities include the National Research Institute of Aviation, research laboratories of biology (Hubbard Hall), the Field Station WSU, research laboratories of chemistry (McKinley Hall), and research laboratories of physics (Jabara Hall). The campus includes the Edwin A. Ulrich Museum of Art.

WSU has four satellite campuses: The South Campus is located at 200 West Greenway in Derby, Kansas, began offering courses Wichita State University in January 2008. Wichita State University was ranked the top 35th university in the United States by university rankings index of social mobility. Wichita State is placed between National Universities in the United States in the ranking by US News & World Report. In 2014, WSU President Dr. John Bardo has announced plans to launch a major academic and student life initiative, known as the "University of Innovation". The plan began with the completion of renovations of the student union of the university, the Student Center Rhatigan, and opening Shocker Hall, a new 318,000 square foot facility housing 784 beds in the main campus. It includes public / private partnerships with national and international companies that build offices on the main campus of WSU and collaborate with students and teachers in research and product development through a technology transfer system. The university has secured partnerships with three companies: ABI Group of Companies based in Wichita; Sunnyvale, Calif.-based NetApp; and the Indian firm Mahindra Tech. The plan calls for adding more than 20 new buildings, including a new building for prospective W. School of Business, a new residence, commercial offices Frank Barton, "creative" collision locations, two mixed-use developments and a hotel. Ground will be broken in the first building, Technology Transfer / experiential Building Learning in the 1st quarter of 2015. The development occurs at the site of the property of the WSU Braeburn golf course adjacent to the campus, which closed in November .

Tuition for full-time residents attending Kansas Wichita State for the 2010-2011 academic year is $ 5,890. While rates for residents from out of state for the 2010-2011 academic year are $ 13.924, enrollment in the state of Kansas Wichita for residents placed it as the exemplary public university, slightly below the weighted average enrollment among the six public four years of Kansas.


Athletics

WSU is an institution of the NCAA Division I and fields teams in tennis, skiing, basketball, athletics, golf, baseball and volleyball men's and women's softball. It also offers club as team sports, bowling, shooting, and other intramural sports.

baseball team men is highest winning team college baseball for the past 31 years, numerous conference championships and NCAA tournament appearances. The baseball team won the national championship in 1989 and was runner-up in 1982, 1991 and 1993. They play in the stadium Eck.

team men's basketball played in the NCAA tournament ten times since 1954, advancing to the Final Four in 1965 and 2013, the Elite Eight in 1981 and the Sweet Sixteen in 2006 and 2015. The team also won the Championship National Invitation tournament 2011, beating the Alabama Crimson Tide. Shocker track and field history: Olympic Seven. Two national champions. 60 NCAA All-Americans. Under Steve Rainbolt (2001-2012): 14 in Missouri Valley Conference Team Championship. 29 NCAA All-Americans.

Men Cross country skiing: Established in 1947. Eight Missouri Valley Conference titles, five consecutive (1971-1975). Five NCAA All-Americans. Nine Missouri Valley Conference champions. 46 winners of the All-MVC awards.

Woman Cross country skiing: Established in 1983. 10 Missouri Valley Conference titles, six consecutive (2005-10). Four NCAA All-Americans. Six Missouri Valley Conference champions. 56 winners of the All-MVC awards.

The school suspended its football program after the 1986 season due to low attendance, financial red ink, recruiting violations NCAA, and the deteriorating state of Cessna Stadium. He had it been never recovered from the loss of 16 starters, his sporting director, football coach and many other critics of the WSU program in a plane crash in 1970 (see below). Legendary NFL coach Bill Parcells was a linebacker at WSU in 1962 and 1963 before serving as an assistant lecturer at Wichita State University 1964.
