New Mexico State University

New Mexico State University (NMSU-commonly known as Las Cruces, NMSU, New Mexico State or State NM), is an important public, land-grant, research university in Las Cruces, New Mexico, United States. Founded in 1888, it is the oldest public institution of higher education in the state of New Mexico. NMSU is the second largest four-year university in the state, in terms of total enrollment at all campuses from 2011, with campuses in Alamogordo, Carlsbad, Doña Ana County and subsidies, extension centers and research through New Mexico.

It was founded to teach agriculture in 1888 as the College of Las Cruces, and the following year became the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. It received its current name in 1960. NMSU has 18,497 students enrolled from fall 2009, and has a ratio of teachers to students from about 1 to 19. NMSU offers a wide range of programs and awards associate's, bachelor's, master's and Ph.D. degrees through its main campus and four community colleges. NMSU is the only research-extensive land grant, US-Mexico border classified by the federal government as serving Hispanics institution.


 History

In 1888 Hiram Hadley, an educated at Earlham Indiana University professor, he started College Las Cruces. A decade later, the Territorial Assembly of New Mexico led to the establishment of a school of agriculture and agricultural experimental station with Law No. 28, Rodey Act of 1889. It stated, "that this institution is at or near the town of Las Cruces in Dona Ana County on a land area of ​​not less than one hundred (100) acres, this land could be adjacent to the main irrigation ditch Cruces, south of the town ". Las Cruces college and then merged with the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, and opened on January 21, 1890. It began with 35 students and 6 teachers. The university was supposed to graduate its first students in 1893, but the only major, called Sam steel, was killed before he could receive his diploma. The classes met in the building two-room adobe Las Cruces College to new buildings were erected on 220 acres (0.89 km2) campus three miles (5 km) south of Las Cruces. In 1960, moving to better represent its operations, New Mexico A & M was renamed New Mexico State University for a state constitutional amendment.

Libraries


NMSU has two main libraries in the main campus.These they include Branson Hall Library and the Library Zuhl. Both libraries have a total collection of over 1 million volumes.

Branson Hall Library

Museums and Collections

NMSU is home to several museums, collections and galleries. Arthropods NMSU Museum, which houses more than 150,000 research and teaching of 5,000 copies, is in Skeen Hall. To improve student safety, the department oversees a network of cameras around campus, using material recorded to solve crimes after they occur or control in real time to investigate suspicious activity as it occurs. The university is currently working to improve the quality and consistency of the cameras across campus.
